Investigative Genetic Genealogy for Cold Cases & Unidentified Remains

Cold cases stall. Resources run thin. Families and communities wait — sometimes for decades — for answers that traditional investigative methods have been unable to provide. Investigative genetic genealogy has changed what's possible, helping agencies identify both unknown perpetrators and unidentified remains with evidence that has always been present in DNA.

Leasure Genetic Genealogy Services brings 17 years of genealogical expertise and specialized investigative genetic genealogy training to work alongside your agency. We are not a large forensic vendor with a case queue. We are a dedicated research partner who takes your cases seriously, works with transparency, and keeps you informed at every step.

If your agency has DNA evidence from an unsolved case — and no clear path forward — we may be able to help change that.

Case Types

What We Can Help With

We assist law enforcement agencies with cases where unknown-source DNA evidence is present but a traditional database hit has not produced an identification.

Unidentified Human Remains

John Doe and Jane Doe cases where a DNA profile exists but the individual has not been identified through traditional means.

Violent Crime Cold Cases

Unsolved homicides and sexual assault cases with perpetrator DNA evidence, including cases decades old where traditional leads have been exhausted.

Unknown Perpetrator DNA

Cases where perpetrator DNA is on file but has not matched any known offender in CODIS or other law enforcement databases.

Missing Persons

Investigations involving a missing individual where biological DNA evidence is available and can be used to develop investigative leads.

Methodology

Our Approach

Investigative genetic genealogy combines two distinct disciplines: forensic DNA analysis and traditional genealogical research. Our process is methodical, documented, and fully compliant with applicable ethical guidelines.
01

DNA Match Analysis

We analyze DNA matches from the law enforcement opt-in database at GEDmatch and, where applicable, FamilyTreeDNA's law enforcement cooperation program — identifying genetic relatives whose profiles may connect to the unknown individual.

02

Family Network Research

DNA matches are organized into probable family groups, allowing us to map distinct ancestral lines and focus research on the branches most likely to lead to an identification.

03

Traditional Genealogical Research

Using vital records, census data, historical documents, and a range of genealogical databases, we build out family trees — working toward candidate identifications.

04

Relationship Assessment & Correlation

Candidate identifications are assessed by correlating genealogical findings against known case details — geography, age, timeline, and other contextual factors — to narrow and prioritize leads for investigative follow-up.

A note on DNA profiles and database access: Leasure Genetic Genealogy Services does not perform laboratory DNA extraction or testing. Agencies are responsible for obtaining a compatible upload file from their approved forensic laboratory and uploading it to the GEDmatch law enforcement opt-in database prior to engagement. We work exclusively within authorized law enforcement genealogy database frameworks and adhere to the ethical guidelines established by the genetic genealogy community for forensic casework.
